I think I would have added a budget, in an excel sheet or mint.com, and possibly a video. The video could even have been done using a blackberry or camera by the individuals in order to give it a more "realistic" feel.
Yes, present times as far as job hunting sucks. But what bugs me is he's complaining he doesn't have a job, that he's sitting home alone all day, and it's 2009 and he's running out of unemployment - yet he had a job offer for $35,000 which he turned down. Wouldn't you just take it anyway to get some money in your pocket rather than sitting on your butt being all depressed waiting for something better to come along?? I have no pity, that was a dumb move.
As far as adding, they could have linked to sites which list recession-free jobs, maybe even put up a monster ad? Even pictures of their house would be good, to give us a better idea of how they're struggling.
I agree with the comments above...I think that a video, or even better pictures to display their current living situation would allow the readers to connect with this couple on a more personal level. This article alone didn't make me feel sympathetic toward them at all. Seriously, they had to give up fancy pastry stores and a vacation to Mexico? Tragic.
I would have added a video too... you get to know the people a little bit but I would like to see them talk and interact to get a better feel for who they really are as people
Since losing your job, while becoming ever more common these days, is still a very sensitive subject. Therefore I think this story could have been better told through video. I think it would have helped convey the emotion of the couple, who were forced to move out of their condo and have put off plans of starting a family. Also pictures of their old residence compared to the one they are now living in would have been a good example of the kind of sacrifices people are being forced to make after getting laid off.
I think a video would definately have been effective. If they had a camera crew follow them around and track all of their expenses on a typical day, then it would have given the audience a better picture of how much they're stuggling. It would also be good to see how small their condo is too. More pictures of them would also work because they only have the one of the two of them sitting at a table.
I'm where you'll go each week to find your assignments. You should check back every so often to find tips that might help you. (You might even want to offer tips so your classmates can learn from your successes or mistakes.)
